Reiki: What Really Happens During a Treatment

How does Reiki treatment work, what do people report after it, and how should studies be classified? Plus: what you should pay attention to when choosing.

Reiki is a method originating in Japan in which the person treating the person places their hands on or a few inches above the clothed body and remains there silently. According to the idea on which the method is based, life energy is transmitted. There is no scientific evidence to support this assumption - yet many people report a deep sense of calm during a session. Both are part of a fair description. During Reiki, the hands rest calmly on or above the clothed body. On Zeen Connect you can find Reiki providers, their training levels and how they work. The treatment takes place while dressed and usually lasts 45 to 60 minutes. Individual on-site sessions and remote treatments are available. Compare providers by skill level, experience and location. How the session is going. After a short conversation, you lie down on the therapy table covered with a blanket; only the shoes come off. The room is quiet, the music often plays quietly. The person treating the person puts his hands on different places one after the other - head, shoulders, torso, legs, feet - and stays there for a few minutes. Some gently touch, others hold their hands a few inches above the body. Almost no speech. The session lasts from 45 to 60 minutes. People report different things: warmth under the arms, tingling, a feeling of heaviness and very often sleepiness. Others don't feel anything special and just find it pleasantly quiet. The meeting is usually followed by a brief exchange of words. Then drink water and get up slowly; some feel noticeably relaxed or tired for a few hours. How the study situation can be classified. Accuracy pays off here because statements on the internet vary widely. Controlled studies of reiki do exist, but they are mostly small and methodologically weak; Systematic reviews have concluded that efficacy beyond the placebo effect cannot be demonstrated. The basic assumption of transferable life energy has not been scientifically proven. This does not mean that the described experiences are fictional - an hour of lying quietly in a quiet room, with the undivided attention of another person and without demands, is in itself relaxing, and that is what many describe. Reputable providers use careful language and talk about relaxation, not treatment. Reiki is not a cure, does not diagnose or replace medical or psychotherapeutic care. For whom it is suitable and when caution applies. Reiki is physically undemanding and therefore accessible even to people for whom massage is too much - for example in cases of great exhaustion, high sensitivity to touch or in phases when active treatments would be too strenuous. Common causes are tension, difficulty sleeping and the desire for an hour of complete rest. We advise caution elsewhere. First, when it comes to promises: anyone who claims that Reiki cures diseases, replaces medication, or works for serious diagnoses is crossing a clear line. Second, when stopping necessary treatments - never change prescribed therapies without consulting your doctor. Third, with distance healing, which is sold at a high price: it is particularly difficult to categorize and therefore requires sober expectations. If you have serious problems, the doctor's office is the right address. What you should pay attention to when choosing. Reiki knows levels of training, commonly referred to as First, Second and Third Levels or Mastery Levels; ask about that and also how long someone has been training and who they have trained with. However, the language is more important than the diploma: whoever talks about relaxation and calmness and explicitly says that the treatment does not replace medical care, is acting responsibly. Anyone who promises a cure, talks about the treatment of serious diseases or advises against visiting a doctor is a reason to leave, not a reason for a second opinion. Clarify the price and duration in advance and be wary of expensive packages that require payment in advance. One session is enough to make a first impression - judge based on how you felt, regardless of what was promised.

Do I have to undress for Reiki?

No. The treatment takes place in clothes, only shoes are removed. Comfortable clothes are recommended, as you will lie quietly on your back covered with a blanket for about an hour.

Is the effectiveness of Reiki proven?

Systematic reviews have concluded that an effect beyond placebo has not been demonstrated. Many people still find the session very relaxing - it probably is and is associated with peace and nurturing.

What is telemedicine?

This includes working without presence, often by appointment. There is no evidence for this form and it is particularly difficult to classify. Be careful if it is expensive or sold as a package.

Can Reiki replace medical treatment?

No. Reiki is not a cure, does not diagnose or replace medical or psychotherapeutic care. Never change your prescribed therapies without consulting your doctor.
